Let’s talk a few spring 2020 trends in the fashion industry. The Disco Collar: And just like that disco’s not dead. The wide collar favored by the Studio 54 set made a surprise comeback on the spring 2020 runways. Modernized on coats, jackets, and button-downs at Lanvin, Ferragamo, JW Anderson, and beyond, the look is often shown with contrasting colors to make it really stand out. Because what’s the point of a super collar if you can’t really see it?
Before you cover your eyes and cringe at the idea of literally wearing a bra as a top, hear us out. While, yes, we saw many designers such as Loewe and Olivier Theyskens display bras that looked more like contents of a negligee drawer and less like tops, we saw the opposite as well thanks to satin bra tops at Givenchy and kitschy co-ord sets at Maryam Nassir Zadeh. Style yours under a blazer or as a top all of its own. Either way, this is one trend we’re daring you to dabble in this season. Surprise, surprise—suits are still a thing, but we wouldn’t be talking about them in yet another trend guide if they weren’t still just as important. Luckily, there have been a handful of fresh updates to the world of suiting that will relight your fire for all things tailored and coordinated this season. With the addition of vests and waistcoats resulting in the return of three-piece suits, as well as Bermuda shorts for the more casual gal, the sartorial world has proven that when it comes to a well-rounded wardrobe, a good suit is a must. There were certainly many suiting separates styled on the S/S 20 runways, but today, we want to highlight the more literal takes for spring so that you can suit up and shop accordingly.
The biggest labels are taking the lead: as Gabriela Hearst put on what she termed the first carbon-neutral fashion show, in New York, Gucci announced a goal of net carbon neutrality through a combination of reducing and offsetting all carbon emissions from its supply chain. Its parent company Kering swiftly followed suit, committing to climate neutrality across the group. Others used their catwalk sets to signal a new mindful approach. Dior surrounded its runway with trees destined for replanting in Paris’s urban areas. Louis Vuitton kept things minimal, with bleached pine stadium seating sourced from sustainably managed pine forests in the Landes region of France which, it announced, would be repurposed after the show by the organisation ArtStock. There were smaller initiatives, too: in London, Roland Mouret partnered with Arch & Hook to create clothes hangers made from recycled marine plastic, while at Preen by Thornton Bregazzi, the designers were making some pieces out of deadstock fabrics from previous seasons. “It wouldn’t be a spring trend report without some sort of floral reference, now would it?” pointed out Glamour’s Ana Colon. “For 2020 there actually is a major innovation in the print: Designers are honing in on roses, specifically, to make their spring collections feel, well, spring-y. And the result is incredibly elegant.” While hardly the most revolutionary concept for a spring/summer collection, designers can always rely on florals to brighten things up. It’s a versatile, visually appealing and colourful theme which seems perpetually popular with consumers, so always a safe bet for Springtime.
