It’s also a great way to spark a conversation about the value of helping each other out. Another option is to use a sourcebook as a way to spend at Black-owned or operated businesses. The Official Black Wall Street directory is a comprehensive directory with which you can search for a vast array of products and services, both e-commerce and brick-and-mortar. Start making a list of all the places you would like to shop from, and for which products and services you’d like to purchase.
Despite the challenges, many Black-owned businesses in the U.S. continue to grow. Between February 2020 and August 2021, Black-owned businesses increased by 38 percent, a study by Merchant Maverick found, even as the number of white and Asian-owned businesses dropped slightly. MerchantMaverick.com’s “Top States for Black-Owned Businesses in 2022” report found the pandemic had created opportunities for Black entrepreneurs, particularly in Mid-Atlantic and Southern states: Virginia, Maryland and Delaware ranking in the top five states for Black entrepreneurs.
